Most grocery lists are written in the order things come to mind. That's why you walk back and forth across the store and still forget the onions. A few small changes make the list faster to write and faster to shop.
📝 How to write a better list
Plan meals first
Decide what you'll eat this week, then list the ingredients for each meal. A list without a plan is a guess.
Check what you have
Look in the fridge, freezer and cupboards and cross off what you already own.
Combine duplicates
Three meals need onions? Write "onions × 3" once.
Group by store section
Produce, meat and fish, dairy, bakery, dry goods, frozen. You'll walk through the store once.
Add quantities
"Chicken" leads to overbuying. "500 g chicken thighs" doesn't.
🗂️ A list template
🥬 Produce
Onions × 3, carrots, bananas, lettuce, lemons
🍗 Meat & fish
Chicken thighs 500 g, salmon fillets × 2
🧀 Dairy & eggs
Eggs × 12, yogurt, cheddar
🍝 Pantry & frozen
Rice, pasta, tomato sauce, frozen peas
Let the plan write the list. When you plan meals in Finicky, every ingredient across your meals is grouped into one shopping list automatically.
🛍️ At the store
- Don't shop hungry. Hungry shoppers buy snacks.
- Check unit prices, not just the sticker price.
- Only buy "deals" for things already on your list.
